Therapy Tales: Small Victories Inside the Heartwarming Clinic!

In the world of cinema, characters like Jhilmil from “Barfi” and Shahrukh Khan’s portrayal in “My Name is Khan” have stirred deep emotions, shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). But did you know that Occupational therapy serves as a crucial cornerstone in treating not only ASD but also related disorders like ADHD, sensory processing disorders, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis?

Despite the strides made in therapy, confusion often arises between physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Both are integral to rehabilitation, yet their focuses differ. Physiotherapy targets physical aspects, enhancing movement and strength, while occupational therapy delves into daily life intricacies, fostering independence through tasks and activities—our “occupations.”

To delve deeper into occupational therapy, I recently visited a clinic. Becoming an occupational therapist entails completing a four-year bachelor’s degree, followed by specialized master’s degrees. This ensures therapists are equipped to effectively address diverse needs.

Now, let’s pause and reflect on the simple acts we often take for granted—tying shoelaces, buttoning shirts, or zipping up pants. For most of us, these tasks are second nature. But for children with disorders, they pose monumental challenges, slipping through their fingers like grains of sand.

During my visit to a pediatric occupational therapist, I witnessed firsthand how therapy transforms lives. Handling children, especially those with disorders, isn’t easy.

Here are some key takeaways from my visit:

  1. The therapist constantly engaged children by calling out their names, acknowledging their limited attention spans.
  2. Some children responded well to sounds or vibrations, while others required louder cues to stay focused.
  3. Positive reinforcement was paramount, with the therapist praising and applauding children to motivate them.
  4. Therapy sessions were not just clinical exercises but interactive experiences, where progress felt like play.

Each small victory in therapy is celebrated, aiming to improve children’s quality of life by teaching essential skills..

Now, let’s explore some of the treatments or games used during therapy for children:

  1. Sensory Differentiation: Enhancing sensations by distinguishing between textures like grass or leather.
  2. Swings: Addressing fear of gravity by incorporating swings into therapy sessions.
  3. Matching Games: Improving cognitive skills through picture matching exercises.
  4. Storytelling: Using pictures to weave engaging tales, fostering creativity and communication.
  5. Coordination Activities: Enhancing coordination through jumping and object collection exercises.

In the clinic, as I watched the children, My Favourite ma’am, Dr. Vandana Rathod’s words resonated in my mind: “You guys have everything, yet you’re indisciplined.” Her reminder of the importance of discipline struck a chord with me. Despite my mischievous tendencies, I aspire to heed her wisdom.

A heartfelt thank you to IGNITE YOUNG MIND CLINIC and Dr. Yash Desai for their unwavering support and guidance. I look forward to exploring more clinics to broaden my understanding. If you have any contacts to share, please do! Stay tuned for the next blog, promising even more captivating insights. Until then, stay curious!

Regards,

 Madhav
